The great thing about fruit is that it is a rich source of antioxidants. This range of substances protects the cells of our dogs (and ourselves) from damage by free radicals. And our four-legged friends really need that! Despite the fact that fruit is relatively rich in sugars, the fibers ensure that these are absorbed gradually. The antioxidants anthocyanins also help to absorb sugars. Other polyphenols support the metabolic balance and slow down the speed at which sugar is absorbed into the body. Nature knows what it is doing!

Apples are rich in vitamin C (important against infections), rich in various antioxidants, fibers including pectin, malic acid and even some butyrate! Apples also help to increase the level of acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter that is essential for a good memory and learning ability. Pears are also rich in antioxidants, fibers, vitamin C, K and folic acid. Bananas are rich in potassium and magnesium, fibers, antioxidants, and an amino acid that is often underrepresented in dog food: tryptophan. Tryptophan is the precursor substance of serotonin, the neurotransmitter that ensures a good state of mind! Bananas also contain the 'helper' for a well-functioning nervous system: vitamin B6.
