The liver of healthy dogs, cats and horses produces vitamin C from glucose. On average, a dog produces 36mg per kilo of body weight (1 gram per 30kg of body weight), a horse produces 72 grams of vit C per day. The production of vitamin C is very age-dependent. In older animals, but also in chronic diseases, physical and psychological stress, the production is significantly lower. Supplementation is also important in animals with reduced liver function. Vitamin C is excreted via the kidneys and bladder.
Because animals produce their own vitamin C (with the exception of humans, monkeys and guinea pigs), vitamin C is not often supplemented in food and is not considered an essential vitamin to add as therapy.
Vitamin C produces collagen, is involved as a coenzyme in various biological processes, is a strong antioxidant, eliminates heavy metals, strengthens the immune system and has an antibacterial and antiviral effect.
The indications are very broad and can be used for all chronic diseases.
