Calanus oil is the oil of a crustacean, the Calanus finmarchicus, which is fished in the North Atlantic Ocean and falls under the zooplankton. The oil has a number of active substances such as astaxanthin and contains unique fatty acids in the form of wax esters, which means that the oil is digested more slowly and ends up in the last part of the small intestine and large intestine. This gives it broader health properties compared to fish or krill oil. Another advantage is that the oil is a sustainable and responsible source of omega 3 fatty acids and that it is very pure with a minimal load of heavy metals, certainly compared to many other fish, krill or green-lipped mussel oils. This is our main reason for not including salmon, krill or green-lipped mussel oil in our range.

Calanus oil contains 15 types of fatty acids, of which stearidonic acid (SDA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and alpha-linolenic acid have the highest concentrations. This composition has a very high absorption compared to other omega 3 oils and contributes to a strong increase in plasma levels of EPA and DHA. EPA and DHA activate the FFA4 receptor in the intestines. This receptor is better activated by the wax esters than other omega 3 oils, which stimulates digestion, suppresses hunger and regulates metabolic processes and inflammation in macrophages and fatty tissue. Furthermore, calanus oil contains the substance policosanol. This strengthens muscle mass and muscle function. Furthermore, it has a beneficial effect on blood cholesterol levels and platelet aggregation. Astaxanthin is a strong antioxidant.
